Death of our "second team" status - about time?
Personally I don't have a second team - I loathe some teams and don't mind some others

I note that the fans of Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton etc have actually reacted really badly to losing to us and I think we are starting to threaten them - the truth is that their "soft spot" for us has always meant "great game v west ham - great atmosphere and we beat them"

Personally therefore I think the more they react the more we are progressing and I look forward to continuing to ruin their home bankers against us

No one likes us I don't care

I don't think Shankly was being snidey, he was telling it how it was at the time

West Ham, lovely team, 4 points

The four points comment about West Ham is snidey, no matter who said it.

geep, Shankley was a true football man and in no way snidely.

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
It depends on whose second team we are, and why.

The snidey Shankleys can fuck right off, but I certainly don't mind supporters of other teams genuinely admiring the way we play.

That probably happened less under Allardyce than it is going to happen under Slaven, so if it annoys you prepare for the worst.

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
I don't think we were anyone's second team but we had, back in the day, a reputation for playing attractive football and neutrals quite enjoyed watching us because of that.

Mike

Couldn't agree more - I like the fact that they are irritated by our progress - take a look at the pundits mcmanaman, Pinocchio, souness, Owen, redknapp, -lawrenson,lineker, spot a trend?

They all played for the very clubs we now threaten to push past

I don't have a "second team". I'd go and watch my local (where I was currently living) team if I couldn't get to a West Ham game, then would automatically look for their results forever after, but didn't actually "care" what their result meant.

Bill Shankly was famous for making a comment along the lines of he hoped we never got relegated because we were a guaranteed 4 points on the table for his side next season.

I think many hung on to those sentiments in some claim of reflected footballing knowledge, thereby wanting us to "always be there, but not do too well" - If we're effectively Shankly's second favourite team then that's good enough for them.

Occasional ripples in the calmness of that vista appeared with the arrival of the Argentines. Once they were eventually let off the leash, the condescending taps on the head started to turn into "What the Fuck?"s and a fear/worry that we might actually have teeth set in.

With enormous media help, that all died down once the Argies left, and it was just wind in the digestive system of "Proper Order".

Now, though, all bets are off. All of a sudden, we've lined up the planets. We've almost got 9 numbers on a 10-pole combination lock; we've, basically, worked out what it takes.

Had Leicester not so effectively played "the Bandit" to our "Interstate booze run rig" this season, we'd have had all the headlines (and the vitriol), but our progress has certainly not gone unnoticed.

However, that progress has been achieved with such consummate professionalism that the media, who were originally scrambling for hooks with which to tear us apart, have had to admit defeat.

As for the fans of other clubs liking or not liking us? Fuck 'em. They bring nothing to the table.

Yes our attitude should be straight from the wolf of Wall Street

Same with those condescending Liverpool cunts. We were suddenly their best friends when Gerrard scored blindfolded all the way from Swansea in the final we don't talk about. Not anymore, thankfully.

Pecking order? What fucking pecking order.

Being appreciated for our football I get but equally I watched an arsenal fan interviewed after we beat them say "they will be relegated"

Look over your shoulder son, we are three points behind you and soon will have a bigger capacity than you with a much bigger match day margin

No one can any longer look on us as an easy three points

I've had quite a few people say they've enjoyed watching us play this season as the football is entertaining, not because we're their 'second team'.

Never have been bothered about what other fans think of us and don't care if they like us or not.

I do laugh when they moan about us getting a UEFA CATEGORY 4 STADIUM for next to nothing and how they rant that we are ripping off the taxpayer

Agree, there does seem to be a change of sentiment towards us by some, and you can now add those filthy cunts from yesterday to the list.

I was chatting to a Yid the other week, he snarled at me ' I fucking hate ya's' was music to my ears.

I'm with you cuz, I just don't ever want any association with those pikey no mark, scumbags in any shape or form. I hope the council sell their land to the property developers and they have to share with Dulwich Hamlet and get relegated to the Conference South and lower.

Acirons

I put that in there because of the difference - no one likes millwall because of their fans

On the other hand we are threatening the cost status quo of the "super league" candidates

We moved this into the top 20 clubs in Europe by finances (19) and that is based on last year - give it two years with a club who have the deal of the century at the OS in front of potentially 65k

We are actually worrying them all with our potential - Spurs have to borrow £440m just to build their stadium and our price drop has cost them dearly. Arsenal should be worried as should Chelsea

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
I know plenty of rival supporters who are taking note where normally we would be dismissed. They are interested to know what's going on and why. Their status quo is being rocked and they are confused.
I think the second team thing was more about roaming football fans who would like to go to Upton Park to watch a great game of football. I met quite a few of those in the past when it would have been easier to get in and cheaper.

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
I'm not sure it's just the likes of Arsenal, Everton who had a soft spot for us. Plenty of supporters of lower league teams generally liked us too.

I take it as compliment that people think we play good football with the right attitude. Which is definitely the case this year.

fuck em all. the majority of the cunts would have been happy for us to have gone out of business when we were in trouble. so nice to see some of the cunts have similar problems over the last few years :.)

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
Gotta get used to it.

We're gonna spend bigger than we ever have done this summer and really try to push-on in our 54k/60k-seater new stadium next season.

About time that this club tries to show ambition and challenge the elite.

For too long; we've been content with mixing it with the WBA's, Norwich's, Stoke's and so on.

Very exciting times.

Re: Death of our "second team" status - about time?
Yes the 'good old I've always liked West Ham,' tag is disappearing, we've started to compete with the big boys and they don't like it up 'em.
